United Nations Ends Sanctions on Syrian President Before Presidential Visit

The UN Security Council voted in favour to an American proposal removing restrictions on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa before his presidential meeting the coming week.

He was appointed transitional president following his leadership in a revolutionary movement that drove out Bashar al-Assad in December 2024, ending thirteen long years of internal conflict.

Washington's ambassador UN ambassador Mike Waltz stated the United Nations delivered "an emphatic political statement" that acknowledged Syria entered "a fresh chapter" after Assad's removal.

Sharaa was under global penalties while commanding the religious organization Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which was formerly linked to the terrorist network. The US removed HTS from a list of global extremist entities this past July.

Further Restrictions Lifted

The UN also removed restrictions targeting Syria's Interior Minister the interior minister.

The nation's top diplomat welcomed the removal of the sanctions, stating online: "Syrian officials convey thanks to Washington and supportive states for their support of Syria and its people."

Upcoming White House Meeting

Sharaa's White House visit on Monday follows American leader Donald Trump remarked that Sharaa achieved "significant advancement" working toward stability to the previously divided state.

After the meeting, the US president stated Sharaa had "a legitimate chance at pulling it together".

The pair met initially in May, when Trump visited Riyadh on a tour of the Middle East.

Following that encounter, Trump portrayed Sharaa as a "tough guy" with a "very strong past".

The HTS organization he led operated as the terrorist network's partner in Syria until he severed ties during 2016.

Earlier American Trip

The upcoming meeting will not be his initial visit to the United States in the current year. In September, he made history as the initial Syrian president to speak before the UN General Assembly in Manhattan in almost 60 years.

In his speech, he stated the country had been "reclaiming its rightful place within the global community" and demonstrated unity toward Gaza's residents.
