WHO Confronts Significant Staff Reduction After United States Financial Withdrawal
This international public health organization has announced plans to reduce its staff by nearly a fourth – amounting to over two thousand positions – by the middle of 2026.
Funding Crisis Triggers Major Reorganization
This decision comes after the US, formerly the organization's largest donor, withdrew financial support previously this year.
Washington was contributing about 18% of the organization's overall funding, creating a significant budgetary shortfall.
Expected Workforce Reductions
According to organizational projections, the staff will decrease from nine thousand four hundred and one posts in early 2025 to around seven thousand and thirty by June 2026.
This reduction of 2,371 positions comprises job cuts, retirements, and regular attrition.
"This year has been one of the most difficult in our history, while we undertook a painful but necessary journey of prioritisation and realignment," stated the agency's director-general.
Financial Shortfall Persists
This Geneva-based body currently confronts a budget shortfall of 1.06 billion dollars for the 2026-2027 period, representing nearly a quarter of its required budget.
This figure represents an reduction from a previous estimated shortfall of $1.7bn reported in spring.
Not Included Finances
These budget calculations do not include a further $1.1bn in potential contributions from ongoing discussions with various donors.
A spokesperson for the organization stated that the current unsecured portion of the biennial budget is actually lower than in previous periods, attributing this to multiple factors:
- A smaller overall budget
- The launch of a fresh fundraising effort
- Higher in participating countries' mandatory contributions
The restructuring initiative is now nearing its completion, paving the way for the organization to progress with a renewed structure.
